Tamoxifen – Nolvadex
Nolvadex is a powerful anti-estrogen medication that effectively binds to estrogen receptors, inhibiting estrogen’s effects. It is primarily prescribed for treating certain types of breast cancer in both women and men and serves as a preventive measure for women with a high risk of developing breast cancer following a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ. Ongoing studies are exploring its efficacy against additional forms of breast cancer.
Indications
Nolvadex is indicated for treating metastatic breast cancer in both genders and is often preferred over surgery or radiation for premenopausal women. Patients with estrogen receptor-positive tumors experience the greatest benefits, and it is also recommended as an adjuvant treatment following surgery.
Dosage
Available in 10 mg and 20 mg tablets, as well as a 10 mg solution, the standard daily dosage of Nolvadex is 20 mg, which can be taken with or without food for optimal absorption. Dosages for breast cancer patients range from 20 to 40 mg daily, with higher doses divided into 1-3 applications. Bodybuilders often start with 20 mg/day, potentially increasing to 30 mg/day, though long-term therapy beyond five years is not recommended.
Bodybuilders
Nolvadex has no direct anabolic or androgenic properties; however, it effectively blocks estrogen receptors, prompting increased gonadotropin levels and testosterone synthesis. This mechanism accounts for the anabolic effects sought by bodybuilders post-anabolic steroid cycle. While some prefer Arimidex, Nolvadex is favored to prevent gynecomastia and water retention, with minimal weight gain observed when used alone.
Women
Commonly prescribed to women with metastatic breast cancer, Nolvadex requires medical supervision and regular breast examinations for potential side effects, including:
- vaginal bleeding
- new breast lumps
- lower abdominal fullness
- pelvic pain
- leg swelling
- shortness of breath
- vision changes
- irregular menstrual cycles
It’s important to note that birth control pills may be ineffective while taking Nolvadex.
Overall Side Effects
Generally considered safe, Nolvadex has a 1-3% incidence of notable side effects. Side effects that may occur in both men and women include:
- hot flashes
- leg swelling
- altered taste
- genital itching
- depression
- fatigue and dizziness
- headaches
- hair loss
- vaginal dryness
- nausea and vomiting
- bone pain
- cough
- abdominal cramps
- loss of appetite
Most side effects are resolved upon cessation of the drug.
Warnings
Nolvadex may cause hypercalcemia in breast cancer patients shortly after initiation. It has also been linked to rare incidences of uterine cancer, blood clots, liver cancer, and vision changes.
Overdose
Although Nolvadex is regarded as safe, overdose effects may present after 4-6 days and can include tremors, dizziness, and altered heart rates, requiring only supportive treatment.
Detection
This drug is subject to screening in various sporting organizations. While women may possess prescriptions, males testing positive for Nolvadex in urine face disqualification from competition, with detection lasting 3-4 weeks post last dosage.
Cost
Readily available yet not inexpensive, Nolvadex averages between $1.50 to $2.00 per pill. Generic alternatives sourced from Asia may be cheaper but raise concerns about quality and purity.
